Freewoods Farm: Where History is Fun

menu2 PFTLT map bot donations thoughts future current farm index

Agriculture has played a vital role in America's life, and for African Americans, the role of agriculture and farming has been even more critical. The small family farm dominated African American history from the early 1600's to the 1960's, and farming was central in the concept of emancipation. Although African American farmers have made enormous contributions through agriculture to the economy of South Carolina - and indeed to the nation's economy - history has largely ignored their role. As the only historical living farm museum in the United States dedicated to re-creating life on farms owned or operated by African Americans, Freewoods Farm will recognize and perpetuate their contributions. Freewoods Farm, located in a rural section of Horry County approximately ten miles southwest of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, will provide education, documentation and preservation of the activities and practices of these farms. The Freewoods Farm will become an economic, educational and environmental engine for the region and bring to life a portion of American history that is missing.
